Hindsight vs Honcho

Hindsight, from Vectorize, turns what your agent sees into typed facts, consolidates them into observations and mental models, and keeps each user, agent, or project in its own isolated bank. Honcho stores every message, reasons over it into a representation of each person or agent, and lets peers keep views of each other. Both self-host and both plug into Hermes, OpenClaw, and Claude Code. Hindsight Cloud charges five times as much to store memory: $10 per million tokens retained, against Honcho's $2 per million ingested.

[Summary]

Hindsight or Honcho: the short answer

choose Hindsight if

Choose Hindsight if

  1. 01You need a permissive license. Hindsight is MIT.
  2. 02You want one installer for 20+ coding CLIs, or Oracle 23ai and Helm deployments.
choose Honcho if

Choose Honcho if

  1. 01Your agent writes a lot and reads on most turns. Hindsight retains at $10 per million tokens, five times Honcho's $2 ingestion rate, and meters recall and reflect on top. Honcho's context reads are unlimited.
  2. 02You want Hermes, Claude Code, and your other agents to share one model of you. Hindsight keeps each bank isolated, with no cross-bank access.
  3. 03You want the original messages kept and individual facts you can delete. Hindsight stores the facts it extracts, not the conversations.

What it isHindsight
An "agent memory system built to create smarter agents that learn over time", by Vectorize
Honcho
An open-source memory layer for the agents and apps you already run
How memory gets builtHindsight
Extracts facts, consolidates in the background
Retain: an LLM extracts facts, entities, time, and relationships. A background worker consolidates them into observations, mental models, and knowledge pages. It doesn't store conversations
Honcho
Reasons over messages into conclusions
Stores each message as sent. A background deriver reasons over new messages and writes conclusions about each participant; dreaming consolidates them later
Whose memory it keepsHindsight
One isolated bank each
One isolated bank per user, agent, or project, with no cross-bank access. Each bank has its own disposition traits
Honcho

What a query returnsHindsight
Fused search inside a token budget
Recall runs semantic, BM25, graph, and temporal search in parallel, fuses and reranks them, and fills a token budget. Reflect returns a reasoned answer
Honcho
context() in about 200ms, or chat()
context() returns a representation, a summary, and recent messages inside a token budget you set, in about 200ms. chat() answers a plain-language question about a peer

[Hindsight]

Hindsight extracts facts into isolated banks and consolidates them in the background

Hindsight's paper describes memory as "a structured substrate for reasoning", split into four networks: world facts, agent experiences, entity summaries, and evolving beliefs. Retain has an LLM turn input into typed facts with entities, time, and relationships. A background worker then deduplicates them and builds observations grounded in evidence, plus mental models: standing answers that get rewritten as the bank learns and can be read without an LLM call (README).

Recall runs four retrievers in parallel, fuses the results, reranks them with a cross-encoder, and fills a token budget. Reflect reasons across memories to answer questions a lookup can't. Each user, agent, or project gets its own bank, isolated by design.

On Hindsight Cloud you buy credit packs from $10 and pay per operation: $10.00 per million tokens retained, $0.75 per million tokens recalled, and $0.05 per reflect call. Those rates took effect July 6, 2026 (billing).

[Honcho]

Honcho reasons over every message into a model of each peer

Honcho stores each message as it was sent, labelled with the peer who said it. A peer is any participant: a person or an agent. A background process called the deriver reasons over new messages and writes conclusions about each peer, including things that follow from what was said but were never stated outright. When a user corrects a fact, the deriver writes a new conclusion with a timestamp, and the old one stays for now. Dreaming runs later, once enough new conclusions have built up, deletes conclusions a newer fact has replaced, and merges ones that say the same thing.

Your agent reads memory two ways. session.context() returns the representation, a summary, and recent messages inside a token budget, in about 200 milliseconds, and those reads are unlimited. peer.chat() takes a question and reasons over the representation to answer it, at one of five levels from minimal to max, priced per query from $0.001 to $0.50.

Writes are asynchronous. A conclusion lands after the deriver runs, in time for the next turn but not the same one. Each peer can also keep its own view of every other peer it has observed. A support agent's model of a customer and the customer's model of that agent are separate objects.

[Where Hindsight fits better]

Pick Hindsight for an MIT license or a lighter local setup

Hindsight is MIT-licensed. If your company's open-source policy rules out copyleft, it clears review and Honcho's AGPL-3.0 code doesn't.

Hindsight is lighter to try locally. pip install hindsight-api runs with an embedded Postgres, and its Hermes integration can run a local daemon that stops when idle. Honcho's self-host runs Postgres and Redis on Docker. Hindsight also covers more deployment targets, including Oracle 23ai, a Helm chart, and enterprise SSO and audit logs on its cloud.

[Why Honcho]

Honcho builds a model of each person and agent at a fifth of Hindsight's ingestion price

Honcho keeps every message, reasons over it into a model of each person and agent, and shares that model with every agent you connect. chat() answers questions about any of them. Start on Honcho Cloud with credits, or self-host the same server.

FAQ

01Should I use Hindsight or Honcho as my Hermes memory provider?+

Hermes runs one external memory provider at a time, and both are listed in its memory provider docs. Pick Hindsight for a permissive license and a light local setup. Pick Honcho if you want one model of you that Hermes and your other agents share, with context reads that aren't metered.

02Which one is cheaper for a busy agent?+

Honcho is. Storing memory costs five times as much on Hindsight Cloud: $10.00 per million tokens retained against Honcho's $2.00. At 100 million tokens a month that's $1,000 on Hindsight and $200 on Honcho, before Hindsight adds $0.75 per million tokens recalled and $0.05 per reflect call (billing). On Honcho, reading context is unlimited; reasoning queries are $0.001 to $0.50 each (pricing).

03Can I use either one commercially?+

Yes. Hindsight is MIT, so you can modify it and keep changes private. Honcho is AGPL-3.0: you can modify it and run it as a service, and if you do, you publish your changes. Honcho Cloud has no such requirement.

04Can I delete a wrong fact?+

In Honcho, a conclusion is one object you can delete, and dreaming reconciles corrected facts. In Hindsight, the request to delete individual facts was closed as not planned; the suggested path is to invalidate a fact through the API.
